Carrera 911

When Ferdinand Alexander Porsche began development on a new six-cylinder engine in 1961, the well-established and highly respected sports car powerhouse of Porsche was paving a road of unprecedented automobile lore. At the 1963 Frankfurt International Automobile Show, the Porsche 911 debut made history. A booming industry watched as the company unveiled the first completely new model produced since the production of the 356. When initially introduced, the 911 featured a rear placed 6-cylinder air-cooled engine that went from zero to 60 mph in 8.3 seconds; an impressive triumph for cars of that era. In the following year, production of the 911 began, branding the Porsche emblem as the insignia of leading sports cars. Known for its outstanding performance in handling, acceleration and tremendous breaking capabilities, the 911’s racetrack performances supported the car’s already legendary persona, taking the championship in the Monte Carlo Rallye in 1969.

Almost ten years after the introduction of the first 911, Porsche created the legendary Carrera, the modern benchmark of its evolving brand. Improving upon the world’s premier luxury sports car, Porsche also unveiled the Cabriolet version of the 911 in the early 1980s. Then, in 1992, the 911 Turbo 3.6 made headlines by successfully defending Porsche's title against seven other manufacturers in the U.S. Supercar Championship, out-performing some of the most powerful production sports cars in the world. The history of the Porsche 911 is one of thoughtful innovation and revolutionary creativity. Inherent in every facet of its development, the 911 provided the automotive world with a definition for the essence of the sports car.

The 911's 44-year run is a story of inspirational craftsmanship and insightful initiative. Although several stylistic design changes were implemented during its lifetime, the original vision of the 911 still pervades the latest 2007 model. Revitalized, re-energized and ultra-modernized, the 911 reconstructs its sports car reputation with impressive speed and subtle style enhancements, raising the standard by which all other sports cars are judged. Packed with the latest in industrial design advances, mechanical technology and convenience electronics, this super sports car is tailored to the needs of daily driving. It personifies the cutting-edge of automotive engineering. With sharpened reflexes from decades of involvement in motor sports, the 911 continues to be the dream car of everyday life.
